Email aliases and disposable email

Good web email services like Gmail allow you to use email aliases in quite a few ways. If you are a bit tech savvy, you'll already know that there are tons of blog posts and help posts on this including Gmail's own. I'll quickly cover it anyway for those who are still missing out on this:

Gmail

If you have registered an email ID "hello@gmail.com", you can also receive email at:

• hell.o@gmail.com
• hel.lo@gmail.com
• he.llo@gmail.com
• h.ello@gmail.com
• h.e.l.lo@gmail.com
• h.e.llo@gmail.com
• he.l.l.o@gmail.com
• hel.l.o@gmail.com

- without doing anything (note that two periods / dots can not be consecutive). So you can use IDs to track who is mailing you and who gave your ID to some one. For example, if you gave your ID to only one person as "hell.o@gmail.com", you'll know that they are the one who leaked it if some one else mails you on it.

To use more meaningful aliases, you can use the + sign after your ID like:

hello+test@gmail.com

- you can use any word at all after the + sign. This will allow you to use filters to sort out your incoming mail to specific labels. You might want to use hello+subscriptions@gmail.com for subscribing to news letters and create a filter which sorts out all mail received to that ID to a label called Subscriptions. You can also think of any other clever uses of it.

You can also send email as these IDs, all you have to do (in Gmail) is:

> Accounts

> Send mail as
and add it like any of the other IDs.

Google Apps

If you use Google Apps, and host your own domain on it, you can also add unlimited aliases (both for groups and users) with anyname@yourdomain.com that forward to your user (or group) email ID. This can be done by going to users (or groups) menu, selecting the user (or group) and adding nicknames.

If you have enabled a Catch-All email address on your hosted domain on Google Apps or any other service that has this option, you can make up email addresses at the spot and give them out and any mail sent to, for example, uncreatedID@domain.com will forward to your Catch-All address.

Yahoo and Hotmail

Other services like Hotmail (windows live) also provide these kinds of alias IDs now with the + sign.

If you use Yahoo, you can have 500 disposable email addresses at a time that are totally different from your personal Yahoo ID and Extra Yahoo ID. If you are using Yahoo Asia, you will already have this option. If not, here's how to convert to Yahoo Asia (keep in mind Yahoo has changed the location of mail options & account info menu but it's too obvious to find if you are used to your Yahoo inbox - the account information is under the same option as your sign out option while the mail options are under the gear button).

Once, you have shifted to Yahoo Asia, going to mail settings will show you "Disposable addresses" option in your settings menu tabs on the left. Create a base ID from that option (base ID is any unique identifier that has no mention of your own ID). Now you will be able to create and delete disposable email addresses that once you delete will no longer send mail to your yahoo inbox.

Arbitrary

If you are looking for arbitrary email addresses that you want to use just for some time and later not care about them, try one of these (or leave any of your own in comments):

Mail Expire: Expires at your present time.
10 Minute Mail: Expires in ten minutes - lets you have extra ten minutes as many times as you want.

Already enslaved by the bots?

You find hundreds of blogs being written for the sole purpose of unique content and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) that businesses sponsor to get their website rankings up on the search engines.

The content quality is often so low or the information itself is so useless that you wouldn't like to stay another second on the page. Here's how to differentiate between a blog that's written for SEO and an actual effort to provide relevant content. SEO blogs focus on appearance of words in structure. Those having an ideal keyword density get higher ranking - what people forget is this keyword density has actually been calculated from actual use of language so as to recognize which content is real and not just a repeated mention of a term. Some one writing just for SEO will not really care about what he writes; the content will be a loose collection of words forced in a sentence structure, some times even forced to form context with the key term being used.

Actual content, on the other hand, is recognizable by reading. It's what you will often call a "good read" or alteast something worth sharing (with no prejudice to the topic of interest). It is still possible to do your website's SEO without actually trying to force your way through it. If you write good quality content, you will not only automatically clear through Google's algorithms but also attract actual reader traffic on your website through social media or directly - those searching for good content find it themselves.

I'm sure nobody reads those blogs written for SEO per se, other than search engine crawlers / spiders / bots; they pay people to write and appease the bots.. we're already being enslaved by machines.

The Dream Job

Some people get a second job to get a much-needed financial boost. Evidently they save more, but they forget that they can now spend more too. Not that they should waste the entire pay on frivolous purchases, but when you work yourself to death with no change to your standard of living you definitely feel that you never had your dream job.

Instead of saving up from multiple jobs, dining out, or getting equipment to make your own life easier reduces stress. If you are thinking of building up a retirement fund for yourself; it definitely is a far-off goal, even if you appreciate it later but if work hard without any immediate rewards, you run the risk of never getting your dreams come true and atleast seemingly make your hard work look futile.

On the other hand, they say, you create your dream job yourself. What might seem mundane and tedious to others, might be enjoyable to you.

Fay ki Boli: The Language Game

"Fay" (ف), Urdu language Alphabet corresponding to the sound of F in English, can be replaced by most other consonants to form another variety. Pay ki Boli is another more complex variation of the language game.

Generally considered as a substitution cipher, it might be used just for fun or more likely to converse in privacy. Farfallino alphabet (Italian), jeringonza (Spanish/Portuguese), and Pig Latin (English) are a few Language Games similar to this.

The game is based on a simple substitution: adding an extra F before each vowel of a syllable. Insert fay in the middle of each syllable (usually before the vowel - spiting the syllable into two) in each word. In some monosyllabic words which would still be so obvious, "yay" (ی), Urdu alphabet for Y, is added at after fay and in reverse before completing the rest of the half.

• tum (you) = tfum
• kya (what) = kfya or kfy`yfa
• kis (which) = kfis

Reverse image search

We're used to searching everything on the internet... "Googling" about whatever we want to look up. Text search has come a long way now. Taking a step up, some services, including that of Google image search and TinEye provide reverse image search. You can now search for images by using images as input query instead of text. In simple words, you can drag and drop an image on the Google Image search bar and it will give you all the similar images along with search results and website links of those images, the one with the highest resolution being on top.


Let's see how you might be able to make the best of this feature which seems although interesting but is a bit vague as far it's usage is concerned otherwise.

If you are looking for a house and you find a picture of it on the internet... you want to buy it but you don't know where it is? Just drag and drop that image to the image search and Google will do it for you with actual addresses. Whether you get that image from a broker who wont give you the address without paying him or you just happen to come across it, Google image search or TinEye can reverse look up for you.

On the other hand, you can debunk fake Facebook profiles that add  you. Want to see if the person adding you has a real profile picture on the display or a fake? Just use the reverse image search and it will display all the other profiles or web pages with the same image. Ofcourse if it's a fake, it will have the same image on many web pages and profiles with different names. Evidently, you can use this as a rough facial recognition software as well by searching for people via their close up images to find out what all profiles they display their images on.

You can also use the reverse image search to find recipes, products or gadgets that you happened to have pictures of and want to acquire or simply read about on the internet or find out who has copied your artwork or profile pictures over the internet or you have a landscape image and you want to know its location - search away.

The quick use I make of it on the routine is to find higher resolution copies of small sized images that I want to use as a wallpaper on my desktop.

Mass Back-up or transfer Gmail chats via IMAP

I have a full load of saved chat history in my gmail and was long searching (and waiting) for an automated method to back them up because manually forwarding them would be crazy (and chats don't get downloaded via POP3, or till recently via any method for that matter). All other work-arounds involved scripts, use of which violated gmail's terms of service and could get your account permanently blocked. I've just tested this one and finally backed up all my chat history. Hope it saves you the effort, if you want to as well and haven't found a way yet. Using this method you can effectively duplicate your gmail account to another (even gmail) ID that supports IMAP. Yes, POP3 was always there, but unlike that IMAP keeps same labels (folders in other services) etc and copies everything exactly. IMAP is not new either but unlike before gmail supports chats transfer now which I just found given my gaps of searches after almost being disheartened on this thing. Feel free to ask me for clarifications on this or share if there's a better method for such.

[Update: Movemymail now only allows transfer of 250 messages for free. Now you can also enable IMAP as mentioned below and use hotmail to bring in your mail including chats as hotmail now provides the option of importing email via IMAP. You can also use a PTCL email account.]

You can backup Gmail chat logs with Gmail Keeper now!

A good news! You can backup your chat logs in Gmail now with Gmail Keeper!
To do that, the first step is to enable IMAP access for your chats (this was not possible not long ago), illustrated in the following screenshot.

Update: This was first down by enabling the advanced IMAP controls lab, now this lab has graduated and is a permanent feature. Just enable IMAP in gmail, save the changes and the "show in IMAP" option will be available to check or uncheck in the labels section.

Then, in the backup settings window in Gmail Keeper, you must set ‘Chats‘ is a ‘Label’ when being asked, as shown in the following screenshot.

And the backed up gmail chats will be stored in eml format just like the ordinary emails. Check the screenshot below to have a look how the chat logs look like in the free Thunderbird email client program.

Monitor your Website’s Uptime with Google Docs

I like to get email alerts as soon as my website goes down. Can't afford downtime? Do you want it too? Just use a simple hacky Google Document to monitor your website and its uptime / downtime - no limits.

As soon as your website goes down or is no more accessible, you will get an email alert.

There are a few website monitoring services available to track website uptime (and downtime) but this Google Docs Juggaar (hack) is very simple and you can build or modify it yourself to match your requirements. With Google Docs, you can configured them to check your website status every minute. This means that you’ll know instantly when your site goes down. And, ofcourse, you get to have it for free.

Here is how labnol.org does it. Further more, they also show how to hack around so that you even get SMS alerts. See their step wise method below. You can visit their link (given at the end) for more of their hacks - this is one of the best life hack blogs that I follow.

Website Monitoring with Google Docs

It will take a minute to configure Google Docs as an uptime monitor for your website.

1. Assuming that you are signed-in to your Google Account, click here to make a copy of the Google Docs sheet.
2. Put your website’s URL in cell E3 and your email address in cell E5. This is the address where you wish to receive notifications for downtime and uptime.
3. Go to Tools – > Script Editor – > Resources – > Current Script’s Triggers and set a Time-Driven trigger for every minute (or 5 minutes).
4. Save the Trigger and Google Docs will show a big red warning asking for authorization. Just accept it and Save the trigger again.

That’s it. The Google Docs sheet will monitor your website in the background at all times and will send an email alert whenever it has trouble accessing the website. If the issue is resolved, you’ll get another notification saying “all’s well.”
Also, the downtime details (including the server responses) are logged in the Google Docs sheet itself so you can later analyze the downtime in greater detail. You can browse the source code to understand how monitoring works behind the scenes.
One more thing. If you know a bit of programming, create a new Twitter app specifically for tracking your site’s uptime and Google Docs can then alert you through tweets and SMS text messages if your site is having problems.

Getting news updates on your Gtalk

Are you into reading news but don't like the news to flood your facebook home page? Don't feel comfortable with an RSS reader either or are just too lazy to open one? This Juggaar is for you then.

I previously used IFTTT in the email to SMS Juggaar. This time it's a more simpler and obvious use of the service. Another service available for the same is Zapier but if you are using it for news, your free (300) zaps will finish in a few days and  you will not get any more news till the next month.

To set up the News to Gtalk Instant message Juggaar you will need an IFTTT account and a Google account. If you don't want your chat history cluttered or just don't want to receive them on your personal account, you will need to create an extra dedicated Google account for this. In that case you might also want to sign in to two Gtalk instances by adding "/nomutex" (without quotes) in the properties of your Gtalk icon. It should then look like: "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe" /nomutex. Now you will be able to open multiple Gtalk instances to use with different accounts.

Once your IFTTT and Gtalk / Gmail are ready, enable the RSS channel in IFTTT. Then enable Gtalk bot channel by following IFTTT instructions (it's a simple procedure). Now create a recipe that uses your news channel's RSS feed to post to Google Talk. For example, to get google news about Pakistan on your Gtalk:

Use this rss feed to post the following msg to Gtalk: Google news: {{EntryTitle}} {{EntryUrl}}

Activate / save the recipe and click check now. You will now get news on your Gtalk as it gets published.

[Update: IFTTT Gtalk channel has been abandoned. Now you can either post the RSS to other channels like email, facebook etc or use the Zapier's Gtalk bot.]

Urdu on your PC

Haven't written in Urdu since you left school? No wonder, most of the writing you do is on the internet or atleast on your PC. Try setting up Urdu fonts on your system and write in your own language. It's not that difficult and the typing is phonetic so, the same as your English typing.

Furthermore, you will be able to read the Urdu text in a good font rather than the broken fonts your browsers mostly gets you. I used to dislike Urdu on the internet because the fonts weren't good. All you need is the same font that you are used to reading in your text books and news papers; Nastaliq.

Go to the CRULP website and download the Urdu phonetic keyboard and install it. All you're going to have to do now is to place the fonts in the windows fonts folder in your C drive. The website also explains in details and step-wise, how to do it.

Doing it in Linux is even easier... Linux just gives you the complete setup. You only need the Nastaliq font which you can place in your fonts director.

Both methods are covered on the CRULP site. The point being, you don't have to be scared of typing Urdu when you have a phonetic keyboard with a reduced learning curve. Time to take your own culture to the internet ;)

Installing Urdu Phonetic Keyboards:

After enabling right-to-left languages on your windows, the next step is to install the Urdu Phonetic Keyboard created by the guys at the Centre for Language Engineering at Al-Khwarizmi Institute in UET, Lahore.

The benefit of installing phonetic keyboards layouts is it makes it easier to type in Urdu and reduces the learning curve. For example, the key A can type ا or آ. Key B can type ب. And so on and so forth.

Currently there are two layouts available:

1. Urdu Phonetic Keyboard Layout v1.1 for Windows
2. Urdu Phonetic Keyboard Layout (2 layers) v1.0 for Windows

My personal favourite is the 2 layer layout as it removes excessive glyphs and reduces the complete alphabets and symbols used in Urdu to two layers.

Here are the installation steps for Windows XP:

1. Download the preferred layout from the following links:

Select “Input Language: "Urdu", and Keyboard layout/IME : ”CRULP Urdu Phonetic v1.1" or ”CRULP Urdu Phonetic 2 Level v1.0"

4. To remove, select a layout and press “Remove” button

Here are the installation steps for Windows Vista and Windows 7.

1. Follow steps 1 and 2 from above.

2. To add Keyboard Layouts

Double click “Regional and Language options” icon
Press “Keyboard and Languages” tab
Press “Change keyboards…” button
Press “Add” button
Select “Input Language: "Urdu", and Keyboard: ”CRULP Urdu Phonetic v1.1" or ”CRULP Urdu Phonetic 2 Level v1.0"

4. To remove select a layout and press “Remove” button

And you are all set to write Urdu with ease. Have fun.

Google Hacks: Getting access to webcams

Previously I've posted a screen recorded video of a webcam hack. Here's how you can do it too through google hacking (a simple search query that reveals all the unprotected cameras).

Go to the google search page (or in your address bar), enter:

inurl:/view/index.shtml

Open the displayed search results. You will be able to control the zooming and camera movements if they have the necessary hardware installed in the cameras.

This is just a beginning of how you can find out unprotected systems using search engine spiders. Try a few search queries of your own, feel free to share them in comments.

Let's download the torrents like normal files

Tired of installing torrent programs for each quick download you get from a friend's PC? Or do you feel uncomfortable with torrent programs?

You might want to try a few websites that cache the download for you and let you download the file(s) like a normal download.

My favourite one is http://www.zbigz.com/ since its free version is fast enough for the internet speed I have on my connection. All you need to do is upload the torrent or give in the link and the website will cache the final download for you to be downloaded by your browser.

To make it more automated like a torrent program, you can use the firefox Auto Shutdown add on so that you don't have to stay up the night till your download completes.

Hide your files in an image: What is hidden is not what you can’t see, it is what you miss to see

Copy that RaR file to a folder where you will work on it.
For Example: C:/lab/

Select a JPEG image you want to use and copy it into the same folder.
For Example notsosecret.jpg

Open MS-DOS
Start > Run

type "cmd" (without quotes).

A DOS window will open stating this:
"Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>"

switch to C:/lab/
type "cd\" (without quotes).
type "cd lab" (without quotes).

Now type:
COPY /b notsosecret.jpg + topsecret.rar imhidden.jpg

imhidden.jpg will appear in "C:\lab\".
Opening it normally would instead open the JPEG image. To open the secret files, use WinRAR.

Gmail to SMS: Go mobile your way

Email services and independent email notification services often provide SMS notifications for your emails, but there are none that I found working for Pakistan. Either the services didn't support SMS in Pakistan or the few that claimed were broken links to nothing.

Unless you were using facebook to receive your email, which happens to be the worst possible option with its infinite scrolling and lack of data liberation or even POP 3 support for if you wanted to move your mail later, you would be left with not much choices. Even using facebook didn't do me good for receiving email notifications which I tried by forwarding my email to my facebook account so that I get to keep the mail in my Gmail too. Facebook showed each message in truncated form and didn't send any SMS notifications for the received emails (even after shifting the thread to the inbox folder).

When you, like me, always want to stay up to date with your inbox but don't always have access to WiFi or a computer, this might be the best way (Juggaar / rig) to go for you. For what it's worth, I did not want to rig up my private Gmail account with any bots or services that I didn't trust or that could be exploited. This is why, you might think I went to a great length to get my customized email notifications on my cell.

I took a bit longer but sure route to get through. This method is specifically designed to work in Pakistan, but should work fine in other countries too. All you need is your Gmail account (optionally 2 Gmail accounts for added security), two twitter accounts (your personal account and an extra/bot account), an IFTTT account, a working cell phone and optionally a Google Doc if  you want to auto clear your inbox (if you choose to use a second Gmail account for added security; explained ahead). I would go for all the optional ones too since I like it secure.

Once you have all the above accounts ready or registered, these are the steps to set it up:

1. Optional (highly recommended): Setup a forward for all incoming mail in your personal Gmail account to the second Gmail account, so that:
1. The IFTTT service can not access your personal account; added security.
2. Your old mail will not be accessed by the IFTTT account; removing redundancy risk.
3. IFTTT email checks after every 15 minutes will not flood your personal Gmail account activity log.
2. Sign in to IFTTT and enable Gmail (giving the second Gmail account if you choose the optional first step) and twitter (linking the extra/bot account) channels by allowing them or linking them in your respective Gmail and twitter services.
3. Create a recipe in IFTTT for Gmail to twitter posts. I chose to use this format as the 'action': New email: {{Subject}} - from: {{FromAddress}}.
4. Save the recipe and enable it.
5. Now sign in to your twitter bot account and set its tweets to private (by checking "Protect my tweets" from settings) so that only the followers can read them as this account will now be tweeting your each new email subject and sender address.
6. Sign in to your personal twitter and connect your cell phone to it from settings (mobile) and check the "Tweets from people you've enabled for mobile notifications" option after enabling the mobile settings. Adjust the rest of the settings for receiving tweets as you want.
7. Now go to your bot account's profile while logged in from your personal account and follow it (you will also have to allow your personal account to follow your bot twitter account by logging into it as you protected your tweets and only allowed accounts can follow).
8. Click to the drop down menu next to the follow (now turned to "following") button and turn on mobile notifications to receive tweets of your bot to your cell phone.
9. Now send a test email to your personal account and wait for 15 min to see if you receive the email notification with the subject and sender via SMS. You can also verify the status from IFTTT recipe if it is working it will tell the 'last checked' time.
10. Remember not to set your email notifications on in twitter just in case you registered your bot twitter account from your second gmail account (or even your personal account) or you will start getting email notifications for your own tweet posts from the bot which were already a result of email ;).
11. If you use facebook, facebook already sends SMS notifications along with email notifications. And if you receive both, you might want forward only the non facebook email like me to avoid duplicate notifications about facebook. I used this filter
         Matches: -{facebookmail.com}
         Do this: Forward to mybot@gmail.com
12. If you want to automatically clear your bot gmail account's inbox every day so that it doesn't even keep your new email for long, you can use this Gmail Auto Purge hack that uses a Google script from Google drive (of the same account).
13. If you ever need, you can request your tweet archive from the settings menu of your bot twitter account to get a summary of emails you received since you rigged this up.

[Update-summary: If your country and mobile carrier is supported by the IFTTT sms channel, you do not need to create the twitter accounts and you can use the SMS channel instead. To find out how to check if you are supported, read the details of this update are explained. However, I found that the SMS channel stops sending notifications so I'd still advice the full method. The reason update is not a full solution is that there is a monthly SMS sending limit on IFTTT, so updates stop after a few sms].

[Update-details for IFTTT sms channel: To use the IFTTT sms channel instead of twitter You can check whether this by trying to activate the SMS channel on your number. If you receive the pin on activating the channel, it means your carrier is supported and in this case you can ignore any steps that involve twitter. The IFTTT sms notifications proved to be slightly faster than the twitter ones (for my mobile service), however, twitter supports a larger variety of mobile careers and countries so it can always be your backup method - not to mention its SMS are routed through a short code and are way more reliable and much more likely to stay in service than the IFTTT international number the delivers the SMS notifications. Furthermore, if you want to set any reverse recipes via IFTTT, a 2 Rs sms to the twitter short code would be preferable to trigger events than to sms an international number; this is a discussion for another time since it can be tweaked to be completely free as well. So, in short, if the SMS channel doesn't work for you, you always have the twitter method to work with by ignoring this update.]

The story starts (I'm shortcutting here) with an [Please control your cussing] insulting everyone on the IRC channel. Most people there believed it was rather funny, but it got even more funny. For information: The dangerous hacker is called bitchchecker and the one being hacked and original author of the comments, who is talking here, is known as Elch. 127.0.0.1 is always the IP-adress of the computer you're currently using, any request there will return to your computer.

What happened is clear: That guy entered his own IP-Adress 
in his mighty Hack-Tool and crashed his own PC. This way, 
the attack on my PC was a failure. I was already starting 
to think that I did not have to worry, but a good hacker 
never calls it a day. Two minutes later he returned.

There was a tension in the room... Would he manage, after 
these two failures, to crash my PC? I waited. Nothing happened. I felt relieve... Six minutes passed by until he prepared the next wave of attack. Being a Hacker, who usually cracks whole data centers, he knew what his problem was now.

He calls me girly and says only his grandma would use a firewall. I know that elder people are much more intelligent then younger, but I couldn't let that rest. To see whether he really is a good hacker I lie and let everything as it is. I don't have a firewall at all, only my router.

Use facebook in a spreadsheet

Wasting time, like all other stuff, is also evolving. As the new social networks develop, the social norms also stance against them.  A Yale undergrad produced something that could counter this stance to use facebook in office in a sneaky way: Hardlywork.in.  This site uses your Facebook Connect credentials, and displays your your newsfeed as a productive-looking spreadsheet on Excel . Now, unless your company tracks everything you send and receive, you don't need to worry about using facebook at office. If they are, you should be more worried about your internet banking credentials ;)
